Get to know puzzle artist Robert Barry who has illustrated a range of 20+ artful jigsaw puzzles throughout his time with The House of Puzzles.
Why did you want to become an artist?
I have always enjoyed drawing and painting from a very young age, so I thought why not make my hobby my way of earning a living.
What style of art do you specialise in?
I enjoy a wide range of styles of artwork, from watercolour and gouache to pencil, and these days it’s mainly digital artwork done on the computer.
What do you draw inspiration from artistically?
I get my inspiration from studying the styles of art by many different artists and from the wonder of nature and wildlife.
What’s your creative process when designing a new puzzle?
I decide on the theme and then create a focal point, gradually building up the picture digitally around it.
What do you love most about illustrating puzzles?
They are fascinating to put together, I get completely absorbed in the creative side of making one up from scratch.
Alongside puzzles, what else do you enjoy creating?
I also enjoy creating artwork for greeting cards and ceramic products and illustrating children’s books.
How do you spend your free time?
I enjoy visiting historical houses and gardens, golf, swimming, cycling, and fishing. I also enjoy doing the odd puzzle during the winter months.
What 3 songs would help you through a creative block?
I very much enjoy listening to jazz, so Fly Me To The Moon, Summertime, and Autumn Leaves are among my favourite songs.
Do you have a favourite go-to snack when designing puzzles?
Yes - crisps, biscuits, and dried fruit.
Can you share a fun fact about yourself?
I enjoy jumping from high rocks into the sea when the opportunity arises.
