Jigsaw Puzzle Artists: Keith Stapleton Q&A
Get to know Keith Stapleton, an outstanding puzzle artist who has painted more than 100 artful puzzles throughout his time with The House of Puzzles.
Why did you want to become an artist?
Originally I wanted to be a professional footballer, but when that didn’t work out I followed my second love, which was art… and that did work out!
What style of art do you specialise in?
I don’t think I have a style as such. I like to paint as the mood takes me using different mediums, but obviously for puzzles it has to be quite tight and detailed.
What do you draw inspiration from artistically?
Being observant, whether that’s of the natural world around me or any imagery that inspires.
What’s your creative process when designing a new puzzle?
When designing a puzzle, it’s usually to a brief, so that would be gathering references that work together to create the final image.
What do you love most about illustrating puzzles?
I actually like constructing the overall image using the collected reference as much as the painting. When it all comes together it can be very rewarding.
Alongside puzzles, what else do you enjoy creating?
When I’m not painting puzzles, I enjoy painting in a completely different style on large canvases. It’s a lovely contrast to the detailed work needed for puzzles.
How do you spend your free time?
I like to spend my free time doing yoga, exercising, listening to music, gardening, walking, and spending time outside in the natural world. I am also a keen rugby spectator with a season ticket for my local club.
What 3 songs would help you through a creative block?
I can’t say I have 3 songs that get me through a creative block as there are too many to choose from, and every day has a different mood with a different genre of music to suit. I do listen to all sorts during my working day though.
Finally, do you have a favourite go-to snack when designing puzzles?
I don’t have a favourite snack when designing as I’m usually too wrapped up in what I’m doing. Although I do like peanut butter and honey stirred into natural yoghurt!
